A solid educational system that addresses and responds to the needs of the people is vital in the progressive development of any modern society. Recently, Kenya government’s intention to overhaul the current system of education elicited a much needed debate from the populace; whether the change is good or bad for the country. That debate however did not capture the significant role that parents play in preparing children for formal education. If we are serious about building a world class educational system, then we cannot downplay the fundamental truth that good parenting is crucial in establishing a workable education system. It is no way possible to replace parents in preparing children for school.
It is unfortunate though that we lay a lot more stringent requirements for one to qualify for a driver’s licence than it is to become a father or mother. It is obvious that we have not really appreciated the critical role that parenting plays in education. It is imperative that we now begin a serious conversation on the requirements of 21st century parenting. In the 21st century, education has to include parents because they are the children’s first and most important teachers.
Parents seldom receive any form of training to raise the level of awareness on the importance of their parenting actions. Many parents are deficient of good parenting skills and are quite ignorant of their importance in raising their children. Parents need to have an in-depth understanding of the role they play in providing their children with a philosophy of life that impacts their wholesome development and positioning in the society and the world of works. We must therefore focus our attention in educating parents and empowering them with the requisite skills necessary in their twenty years child rearing project.
As a parent, you must begin to ask yourself the following questions: Why did I have children in the first place? How does it feel to be a son or daughter to me? What are my primary God given responsibilities in shaping the destiny of my children? What do I need in terms of competency and knowledge to make my 20 years project of raising my children a great success?
